Our Moving Guide and Tips
Below you will find helpful information and tips that some people don't even consider when they are getting ready to move.
Two Months Before Moving

  • Walk through your home and decide what to move and what you want to get rid of. Pay attention to fragile items that will need special packaging and make a list of them.

  • Call a few moving companies and request estimates to make sure your getting the best value.

  • Get organized. Create a folder or binder to keep track of all the information you will gather prior to your move.

One Months Before Moving

  • Start collecting boxes, you will need them. Often your local grocery store will give you boxes that they would have otherwise thrown away.

  • Start using up your frozen foods and pantry inventory that may be more difficult to move.

  • Choose the mover and ask for a break down and estimate of their costs in writing.

  • Begin packing infrequently used items like holiday decorations, off season clothing, and items in your storage closets.

The Week Leading Up To Your Move

  • Finish packing everything that will be moved by the movers and determine when to pack the things you will be moving on your own.

  • Reconfirm the moving day and time with the moving company.

  • Donate any items that you don't want to keep and make sure you get a receipt for tax deductions.

  • Go to the Post Office and fill out a change of address form or you can do it online at www.usps.gov.

  • Update the following with your new address by phone, mail or online:
    • Bank
    • Credit cards
    • Insurance company
    • Human resources at work
    • Your child's school
    • Utility companies (water, phone electric, gas, sewer. trash pickup, cable, internet, and any others)
    • Your doctor's office
    • Your veterinarian
    • Cell phone company
    • Pharmacy
    • Any subscriptions such as magazines or newspapers
  • If you are moving out of town, have your records tranferred by your doctor, veterinarian and child's school to the new facilities you will be using.

The Day Before The Move

  • Defrost and clean your refrigerator and freezer.

  • Pack all of your final items.

The Day Of Your Move

  • Make one last walk through of the house once the moving trucks have been packed to make sure you don't leave any valuables behind. Be sure to check in cupboards, closets and your attic.

  • Make sure that someone is always present for the time that the movers are loading and unloading your items.
